ln -s /usr/java/latest/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Then restart firefox. This was the only way that things worked. Copying the plugin to ~/firefox/plugins did not work.

Sometimes firefox or thunderbird seems to lose profiles for no reason. This can sometimes be fixed with a reboot. Or, look in the profile home for a file called prefs-1.js and prefs.js. Usually, the prefs-1.js is an older file and prefs.js is very new. Delete prefs.js and rename prefs-1.js to see if that fixes the problem.
